This study reviews the world-wide literature on aging and seeks to move beyond received wisdom about attitudes and experiences running from the ancient world to the present.Aging in World History will introduce students and general readers to historical ways of thinking about aging in two senses: the experience of individuals and the transformation of populations. Royal ordinances of 1814 and 1815 gave judges and other fonctionnaires of the Ministère de la Justice the right to demand retirement pensions; they also gave widows the right to demand a portion of such pensions. In making those demands, individuals explained their life histories, summed up their careers, made claims about merit and need, and expressed their hopes for retirement. This article explores female self-images through the study of letters found in career dossiers in the Archives Nationales (Paris) series BB25.

Récent literature on the history of old age in France has pointed to the expression of a new image of old age in the second half of the eighteenth century and to the representational uses of old persons during the French Révolution. This article explores some of those uses and indicates the relative paucity of references to grandparenthood among them. Whether in the fête de la vieillesse or in Revolutionary-era anticipations of the welfare state, old persons are presented as embodying collective memory and individual vulnerability rather than particular qualities of grandparents. Explanations are offered for the particular rhetorical uses of family roles, and some observations are made concerning the Revolution's impact on interactions between grandparents and grandchildren.

La culture de la France moderne avait exprimé une antipathie extrême envers les personnes âgées, surtout envers leur façon de garder la propriété mais aussi envers leur survie elle-même. Les sermons avaient présenté la propriété comme un obstacle vaniteux au passage à l'au-delà, les médecins avaient expliqué la vanité comme maladie des vieux, et les dramaturges avaient créé des vieillards déplaisants qui se refusent à mourir ou à abdiquer leur contrôle du patrimoine. Mais au XVIIIe siècle il s'est fait une grande mutation culturelle. La situation des vieillards a été regardée avec beaucoup de compassion, leur intérêt économique a été reconnu : de nouveaux moyens de soutien aux gens âgés ont été suggérés. Le discours politique a hérité de ce souci et l'image de la vieillesse qui émergeait dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle a défini le langage et les questions de la politique sociale de la vieillesse dans les deux siècles suivants. Cet article examine l'image changeante du vieillard et en considère des explications, exclusivement culturelle ou démographique et socio-économique. On y aborde l'augmentation de l'espérance de vie des adultes survenue au cours du siècle, les altérations subséquentes dans le cycle de la famille, et le nouveau discours qui émergea à tout niveau de la société française à l'époque révolutionnaire.
